The Government is not here to protect the people, that is your problem. The Government is here to serve the people, not for people to serve the Government.
Lets be reasonable sociaism is what you are describing not a republic.

President Obama is in office, we can no longer do anything about Bush. Look at what is happening now, not last year. Obama is a liar and a fool, stop trying to convince us otherwise

Well some of what you say is true and some is false. Social Security was created in the 1930's (during the Depression) not 40's. At the time American life was different. As their parents aged their children were expected to take care of them and the parents lived with them in their homes. Social Security was created to "supplement" the expense of taking care of one's parents. Then, after the Second World War, life in America changed drastically. The returning servicemen went to college, got married, and wanted to buy a home for their bride and expanding family. Plans did not include caring for mom and dad. Medicare came along much later when it was realized that with the aging population living longer, they were developing serious health problems that cost a lot of money. Cancer, Emphysema, and now Altzheimer's were nowhere near as prevalent as they are now. People died from them earlier back then.
And you are right about the public services; schools, parks, half-way houses, and shelters. There are so many more of them now and they all require funding. Our legislators began by looking at all the worthy purposes, but became blinded by the bribes and perks to which they all succumbed.
